The Accelerated 4+1 Pathway at SEAS offers pathways in Chemical, Biomedical, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering; Computer Science; and Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. Barnard students apply in the spring semester of their junior year.

Students intending on applying to the Accelerated 4+1 Pathway at the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science can follow the below timeline when thinking about their application.
Navigating an Application to the SEAS Accelerated 4+1 Pathway
Explore the SEAS Accelerated 4+1 Pathways with faculty advisors, as well as staff at Beyond Barnard and SEAS. Sessions will provide an overview of the eligibility and application requirements for the SEAS 4+1 Pathways. Students must attend a pathway-specific overview session — or view a recording of the most recent session — to move forward with an individual advising session.
In this appointment, students discuss their general interest in the pathway and possible career paths, while gaining an overview of the application timeline and process. Closer to the application deadline, Beyond Barnard advisors provide guidance and feedback on application materials.
In this appointment, students will meet with the faculty advisor dedicated to supporting the specific pathway of interest. Students will utilize this meeting to map out a course plan in line with the eligibility requirements for the 4+1 program of interest.

A limited number of students on financial aid while at Barnard may be eligible for funding via a grant to Barnard and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, thanks to generous support from the Sloan Foundation. This funding includes partial loan forgiveness for undergraduate tuition; a living stipend for selected students in their fifth year; guaranteed Summer Research Institute funding to support mentored research; and the offer of a TA position at SEAS. No special application is required to be considered for this funding. For details, students should schedule time to meet with Beyond Barnard's Associate Dean Christine Valenza Shin or Dean A-J Aronstein.
A maximum of 15 points of credit of graduate-level coursework completed at SEAS while still an undergraduate may be counted toward the MS, but only if the credits are NOT already counted toward the Barnard degree. Any credits counted toward the MS degree must be in excess of the 122 credits (121 for transfer students) required for the Barnard degree, and not have been used towards Barnard major, minor, foundation, or general education requirements. To clarify their credits and how they will be counted, students should consult with the Barnard faculty lead for the SEAS Pathway they are considering.

Application deadline: February 15 of a candidate's junior year at Barnard. Students should meet with the faculty advisor to verify course approvals and with Beyond Barnard to review application materials before submission.
Beyond Barnard supports 4+1 pathway students throughout their matriculation in the graduate program. Students are grouped into cohorts and participate in workshops, events, and experiential programming. Students are encouraged to utilize Beyond Barnard services throughout their program.
